I recently spent five incredible days at the Heavenly Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, staying at the luxurious Zalanta Resort at the base of the gondola. The mountain conditions were phenomenal, with fresh powder everywhere. While the high winds were intense, they didn’t detract from the breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe’s expansive beauty. The pristine white snow covering the slopes made for excellent skiing conditions, and the combination of mountain terrain and lake views created a surreal winter paradise.

State Line Skiing

The Mountain and Terrain at Heavenly

  • California Side: This side of the mountain tends to be more heavily trafficked, especially since the Ski School is located here. It offers incredible views of Lake Tahoe, with the Gunbarrel Lift boasting the best view of all. Riding down from this lift gives you that "gasp moment," as the steep drop and expansive view combine for a thrilling experience. The trails are well-groomed, and you’ll find plenty of beginner and intermediate runs here.

    Lift views of Lake Tahoe

  • Nevada Side: The Nevada side offers a different experience, with fewer crowds and more powder. There are more trails, more lift options, and generally wider runs, which provide an excellent opportunity for relaxed skiing and snowboarding. While some runs are shorter than expected, the diverse terrain makes up for it. For those seeking a challenge, this side also has steep mogul runs, which are even more exciting when the powder is deep. Overall, the mountain offers fantastic conditions and a variety of experiences for skiers and snowboarders alike.

Skiing in the trees!

  • Best for Bay Area Skiers: Heavenly is a top choice for weekend skiers from the San Francisco Bay Area, being only about four hours away. Californians flock here regularly, making it one of the most popular ski destinations for those seeking fresh powder close to home.

Skiing at Heavenly

  • Heavenly Ski Resort is massive and offers runs for all skill levels. With stunning lake views, it's one of the most picturesque ski resorts in the U.S. The resort's expansive terrain includes wide groomers for beginners, intense tree runs for advanced skiers, and excellent backcountry access for those seeking untouched powder.

  • Epic Pass Perks: Consider purchasing an Epic Pass if you're a frequent skier. Perks include:

    • 20% off food, non-alcoholic drinks, and lodging

    • Priority lift access at certain times

    • Exclusive discounts on ski gear and rentals

  • The Epic Pass also includes access to other top resorts like Northstar, Kirkwood, and Vail, making it a valuable investment for snow lovers looking to explore multiple mountains.

Staying in the Zalanta Resort at Lake Tahoe

  • Why Zalanta? Full kitchens in each unit make it easy to prepare your own meals, which is a major win given the pricey and underwhelming food options at the base of the mountain. The spacious layout, cozy furnishings, and modern amenities make Zalanta a home-away-from-home experience for visitors seeking both comfort and convenience. Zalanta is also a great option for families, offering a heated pool and hot tubs open year-round. The on-site gym is well-equipped for a solid workout.

  • Pro Tip: Hit the local Safeway to stock up on groceries. It’s convenient, affordable, and ensures you have everything you need for your stay. Bonus: A Target is set to open in the village this April, making grocery runs even easier. Having these options nearby saves both time and money, making Zalanta an excellent choice for longer stays or family trips.

Other Accommodation Options

If Zalanta isn’t your ideal choice, there are several other excellent lodging options to consider:

  • Stardust Lodge: A popular and affordable option located right by the gondola. It’s a great choice for travelers who want quick access to the slopes without the luxury price tag.

  • VRBO Rentals: These offer cozy and secluded stays, often with fantastic views of Lake Tahoe and additional amenities like fireplaces and private decks.

  • Mountain House Rentals: Ideal for larger groups or families, these rentals provide a spacious and rustic experience with incredible mountain scenery.

  • Getting Around: The Lake Link Shuttle System is a free and convenient way to navigate the area, connecting the California and Nevada sides, the village, and various mountain access points. With a dedicated app to track routes, arrival times, and much more, it's an efficient option to reduce parking stress and get where you need to go with ease.

Dining at the Base of the Mountain

  • Food options are available, but they tend to be expensive and often don't live up to expectations. Opt for cooking at Zalanta or exploring local dining spots further from the village. One solid option is to grab quick bites at Blue Dog Pizza, a casual spot known for great flavor and hearty portions. For something more upscale, The Loft Tahoe offers a mix of fine dining and entertainment, including live magic shows for a unique evening experience.

Exploring the Village

  • The Heavenly Village is a must-see! It’s packed with ski shops offering Lake Tahoe gear, perfect for souvenirs. Each shop has its own style, from trendy modern gear to vintage Lake Tahoe memorabilia.

  • Take time to wander through the various art galleries. One standout is the Marcus Ashley Gallery, which features incredible works from artists around the world. They even showcase rare Dr. Seuss artwork that was released posthumously—a unique find in Lake Tahoe. Another notable gallery is Benko Art Gallery, which highlights creative installations and contemporary pieces that reflect Tahoe’s natural beauty.

Gambling and Nightlife

  • Heavenly sits right on the California/Nevada border. Cross into Nevada and you'll find lively casinos lining the area, offering a fun way to unwind after a day on the slopes. Popular spots like Harrah's and Hard Rock Casino are packed with games, live music, and dining options. Whether you prefer the slots, poker, or just people-watching, the casino scene is buzzing with energy every evening.

Extra Tips for Travelers

  • Weather: Expect strong winds—come prepared with proper gear to protect against gusts on the slopes. Balaclavas, windproof layers, and goggles with interchangeable lenses are highly recommended.

  • Scenic Stops: For some of the best panoramic views, make time to pause mid-ski to soak in the incredible lake and mountain landscape. The observation deck at the top of the gondola offers an unbeatable vantage point for photographers and sightseers.

  • Rental Gear Tip: Check out Powder House Ski & Board for well-maintained equipment and great customer service. They have multiple locations, making returns and adjustments easy.

Would Highly Recommend

Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Ski Resort offers an unforgettable winter experience with breathtaking scenery, exciting village attractions, and cozy accommodations at Zalanta Resort. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or just looking for a snowy escape, this spot should be high on your list. Don’t forget to explore the village, check out the art galleries, and take advantage of your Epic Pass perks to maximize your adventure! Plan ahead, pack wisely, and prepare for a memorable trip to one of the most iconic ski destinations in the country.
